Why Women and CVE? UN Report on Sexual violence in Conflict

On April 13, 2015, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made public a report on conflict-related sexual violence in 19 countries during 2014 that described challenges due to poor monitoring, limited support services, and lack of accountability. The 19 countries that investigated by the special raporteur , Zainab Bangura are consisted of ; The countries with current conflict; Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Myanmar, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The post-conflict settings are Bosnia and Herzegovina, Côte D’Ivoire, Liberia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Some of the findings shows serious problem on sexual violence against women, men, girls and boys. Here are some of the findings;
  • Afghanistan: victim of sexual violence is often charged with adultery,Bacha Bazi (the practice of subjecting boys to sexual exploitation) with 8% of prepetator is local commander
  • Central African Republic: 2,527 cases, including men and boys targeted of rape 
  • Colombia: women living in mining area are vulnerable to sexual violence, report on sexual violence used to control mobility of women human’s rigths defenders,
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo: 11,769 cases of sexual and gender-based violence, 69% conflic related sexual violence committed by armed group
  •  Iraq: Sexual violence has been used as part of the ISIL strategy of spreading terror, persecuting ethnic and religious minorities and suppressing communities that oppose its ideology. 1,500 civilians may have been forced into sexual slavery, has condemned the abduction and detention of Yezidi, Christian, Turkomen and Shabak women and children. Attack to LBGT as part of “moral cleansing” 
  • Myanmar: 14 cases of gang rape and attempted sexual assault, cross boarder trafficking, 
  • Somalia: 46 cases of forced marriage to fighter or rapist 
  • Syrian Arab Republic: Sexual violence against women, girls, men and boys has been a characteristic of the Syrian conflict from its inception
